Trip to Muriwai

We had a great day at Muriwai. We went as part of our inquiry around Environment. We wanted to see the gannets - takapu-  that go to Muriwai every October to nest and have their young. After the chicks are about four months old they leave and fly all the way to Australia. They come back to New Zealand again after a couple of years to have their own young.

We are looking at the sand dunes. We have been learning why it is important to protect our sand dunes by planting spinifex and pingao.

This sand is so soft and silky. It is black because of the iron ore.

Wow. Look at all the gannets nesting on the rocks. How do they know which one is their nest?

We had fun using the magnets to get the iron ore out of the sand.

Visitors from Kristin School

We had some students from Kristin School come to the Year 3 classes. They read a story with us and shared an activity to do afterwards. We went down to the hall to play some games. They even brought lunch for us all! 

Ranger Dave comes to talk to us.

As part of our Inquiry into Environment, Mrs Boxen's brother DOC Ranger Dave Jenkins came to talk to us about his work on Tiri Tiri Matangi Island.

He told us lots of information about the wildlife on the island and how important it is to protect and look after our precious native animals. 

Earlier we looked at a story about raising takehe chicks and wrote about some of the information we found out. We worked together to make feathers to make our own takehe for the classroom. 

Takahe are endangered from possums and weasels. They put the eggs in the incubator and then they warm up.  Connor

All Blacks Visit Target Road School

Last Friday, 21 October, Target Road School was lucky enough to have a visit from three of the current All Blacks' Squad. It was a great experience for the children and a day to remember for many.
Below, you can read reports written by some of our Room 10 students after the event.


The All Blacks Come to Target Road School.

Today, the rugby champions came to TRS. Their names were TJ Perenara, Julian Savea, and Liam Coltham. As soon as the World Champions arrived in the hall, everybody went wild. It was like we were watching in the stadium. It felt like there were billions of people watching. I could feel my heart pumping crazily because I was so very happy that they came. This is what my heart sounded like - boom! boom! boom! They told us some things that they did at school. TJ said he was very cheeky at school. He wasn't very proud of that. (I agree also). Julian said that he did not listen at school and I think he's still thinking about it! Also, Liam said that if he was not an All Black he would surf (I think that's a good idea!) The All Blacks also had a rugby practice with some children outside. That was cool!

The All Blacks Visit.

Today the teachers at TRS were extremely excited because three All Blacks came for a visit. Nearly all the students wore black and white. When all the students and the teachers lined up to go to the hall, the All Blacks came! The players who came were TJ Perenara, Julian Savea and Liam Coltham. We asked them ten questions. It was really hilarious when Julian acted like a robot! After all the questions and answers, the ripper team, Room 1 and the All Blacks played a ripper game. Me and my friends were watching them play. We were in the front row. Then we lined up to go back to class to eat our morning tea.

The All Blacks Come to Target Road School

TJ Perenara and Julian Savea and Liam Coltham all came to Target Road School today. Everyone was super excited. The All Blacks answered some questions. They gave excellent answers to all of the amazing questions. TJ Perenara said he was cheeky in the past when he was little. When they were finished answering the questions, the ripper team went out and they practised with them.
I think they will win their game tomorrow night. I hope so.

All Blacks Visit

On October the 21st Target Road School was lucky to have three of the All Blacks come to visit. The three All Blacks were TJ Perenara, Julian Savea and Liam Coltham. Ten lucky students got to ask a question to the three All Blacks and the All Blacks answered them. TJ Perenara told us that he was very cheeky in school! The ripper rugby team went outside with the three All Blacks and practised some rugby skills with them. We watched them. I am glad that everybody enjoyed having the All Blacks visit us.

All Blacks Visit!

Today the super-duper All Blacks came to visit TRS. Their names were TJ Perenara, Julian Savea and Liam Coltham. Julian Savea did a dance called the robot and everybody laughed. TJ Perenara said he was cheeky at school and now he regrets being cheeky at school. Liam said if he wasn't an All Black he would be a surfer. At the end the All Blacks practised with Room 1 and the girls' champion ripper rugby team. I felt excited to meet an All Black.

Target Road School Mini Olympics

Last Friday all students were involved in an afternoon of fun games and activities. We called this "THE TARGET ROAD SCHOOL MINI OLYMPICS". The activities were organised by Year 5 and 6 students and what a great job they did!

Olympic Gold

We used some pictures to help us write about Mahe Drysdale winning gold at the Olympics. We tried to write like we were actually in the race.

I am rowing to beat him. He is next to me. I need to row faster. The finish line is in front of me. The oars are going back and forth. I'm near the finish line and I won. I felt tired and then my hands are hurting and I fainted.

I was in the race. There were eight other people. They all looked vert serious. I didn't finish talking when he blew the whistle. Arrrr! It is amazing.I am in the lead. Damir was going pretty fast. When it was nearly the end and who won?  I was sure it was the same time. But I was three centimetres closer. I won! I put my hands in the air because I won gold. It took so long I fell asleep on the platform.

I am Mahe, a rower. When the race started I rowed as fast as I can.When I went to the end I saw my neighbour. He nearly beat me. When I came first I felt so happy. I was so proud and happy that I got gold. My neighbours boat was Damir's boat. It was only three centimetres between us. When the race was finished I felt so tired and exhausted. I had used all my strength.

When the race started I was rowing as fast as a racing car. Finally the race was done. I went to see the time and my time was six minutes and 34 seconds. I was so proud of myself so I celebrated. I was so exhausted.

I pulled with all my strength to come across the finish line so I can win. Next I was celebrating my victory coming across the finish line. I was extremely tired and exhausted.

I was rowing as fast as I could in the race. My hands were shaking like earthquakes. I was pulling back and forth.I was scared at first but I was nearly there. Then I was there. I closed my eyes. I won!

Te Reo in Room 10

This term Whaia Isobel is helping us to make up our own class haka. We have used names of fruit for the words of our haka.

Nude Food Wednesday

At Target Road School we are trying to reduce the amount of rubbish that we make or bring to school. We have to take all our food wrappings home instead of putting them into our class bins.

We are now trying to reduce the amount of wrappings around our food in our lunchboxes that we bring to school. 

On Wednesdays we have been having "Nude Food Wednesday". This means that we try to bring no wrappings at all in our lunch box. We are allowed to use paper to wrap our sandwiches in but are trying not to use plastic cling film. We need to try to bring as much food as possible either wrapped in paper, in a reusable plastic container or in a compartment in our lunch box. 
On the first "Nude Food Wednesday" we had one lunchbox that qualified as nude food. Last week we did a lot better and had eight lunchboxes that had no plastic wrappings.

How many will it be this week? 

Personification Poems

We have been learning to use personification to write a poem about a household machine. Personification is when you give an inanimate object human characteristics.

Making a truck

Today two ladies from Bunnings came to Room 10. They had all the materials we needed to make a truck or a racing car.

We had to use a screw driver to screw in the wheels and we had to use a hammer to nail the tray of the truck. It was heaps of fun!

First we got a long hard piece of wood and 4 wheels and four nails. Then we had to screw the wheels down but don't screw them too tight. After that we got some pieces of wood and started gluing and putting nails in. And finally your creation is ready.Kelly
